No Paper, No Pen
No Paper, No Pen is a deeply personal collection of poetry and prose that moves through a landscape of emotion, imagination and lived experience. At times lyrical and contemplative, at others candid, playful or painfully direct, Matthew McGugan’s writing captures not only what he observes, but how he experiences the world around him.
The collection ranges widely. Matthew writes about love and friendship, loneliness and grief, faith and spirituality, nature, politics, disability, sensory experience and the complexities of simply being human. He considers kindness and belonging alongside frustration and isolation, often moving between opposing ideas as he searches for meaning within them.
That contrast is one of the collection’s defining qualities. Warm and cold. Quiet and loud. Hope and despair. Peace and war. Matthew’s writing repeatedly occupies the space between seemingly opposing experiences, revealing a world that is rarely simple and never one-dimensional.
His language can be richly imaginative, transforming sensory overload into highways, traffic jams, electricity and angry clouds. Elsewhere, it becomes spare and direct, allowing a thought or question to stand almost entirely on its own. Throughout the collection, there is a striking awareness of language and its ability to make an internal experience visible to someone else.
“I want to write infinitely but I have no means
No paper, no pen
Only the voice in my very cluttered mind.”
— Matthew McGugan
Questions also run through Matthew’s work. What does it mean to be different? How do we recognize potential in another person? What happens when the mind has something to say but the body cannot easily express it? And how much do our expectations determine what we are willing to see in others?
Yet No Paper, No Pen is not solely about struggle. Humour, gratitude, affection, wonder and hope are woven throughout. Matthew writes with an awareness of both the difficulty and beauty of being alive, creating a collection that is intensely individual while touching on emotions and experiences that are universal.
The title itself captures one of the central tensions of the book: the desire to create when the usual means of doing so are unavailable. What emerges is a body of work shaped by persistence, curiosity and an unmistakable need to write.
No Paper, No Pen asks to be read slowly. Some pieces invite reflection, others provoke discomfort, and others simply ask the reader to notice something differently. Together, they offer a compelling portrait of a writer exploring his world, and inviting us to reconsider our own.
In Matthew’s Words
“Is it okay to be different?
Is it okay to be the same?”

Let us be kind to each other”

And I mean everyone
Has the potential to be
A good person
And human being”
EXCERPT FROM CELEBRATE UNLIMITED POTENTIAL
“Eternal dreams I always have
That someday my voice will resonate in the world”
That could almost become a design feature in its own right.”
