A Voice Beyond Words

Matthew McGugan is a writer, poet and keen observer of the world around him. His work reveals a rich inner life shaped by curiosity, imagination, emotion and an enduring fascination with language.

A nonspeaking autistic writer, Matthew has been composing thoughts and ideas in his mind for as long as he can remember. His writing draws from his own experiences as well as the subjects that capture his attention, including the human condition, spirituality, politics, the environment, music, relationships and the complexities of everyday life.

Matthew experiences a disconnect between his mind and body that can make conventional forms of communication difficult. He is unable to speak, type or handwrite independently, so bringing his words to the page requires patience, concentration and persistence. Using a letterboard, Matthew communicates by pointing to individual letters and spelling his thoughts one letter at a time.

“My mind is always thinking.”

— Matthew McGugan

What emerges from that deliberate process is writing filled with sensitivity, intelligence and imagination. Matthew notices the details of the world around him and carries those observations with him. Experiences, conversations, emotions, sounds and images become part of a constantly active inner world, eventually finding their way into his poetry and prose.

His work is candid about frustration, sensory overload, isolation and the difficulty of being misunderstood. But those experiences are only part of the story. Matthew also writes about love and friendship, humour and gratitude, faith and nature, hope and possibility. His work reflects a deep interest in people and in the ways we understand, judge and connect with one another.

Again and again, Matthew returns to questions of potential and expectation. What do we assume about another person based on what we can see? How much might remain undiscovered when someone communicates differently? His writing invites readers to look beyond those assumptions and consider the person, the mind and the possibilities that exist beneath the surface.

“Everyone, and I mean everyone, has the potential…”

— Matthew McGugan

For Matthew, writing is both expression and connection. It gives form to thoughts that might otherwise remain unseen and allows him to share something deeply personal with people he may never meet.

“I hope my words and writing will speak to you.”

— Matthew McGugan
